I’m honestly not sure why I started playing Resident Evil 7: Biohazard again. Excitement for Resident Evil Requiem? Just the need to replay one of my favorite games in the series? Either way, I booted up the game and played a good chunk of the way through it.
As a fan of both horror movies and horror games, Resident Evil 7 truly is one of my favorites. They diverted drastically from the schlocky action of Resident Evil 6 and went back to the horror roots of the series. This game draws inspiration from many great horror films. You get The Texas Chain Saw Massacre vibes from Jack Baker, The Fly from Marguerite Baker, Saw from Lucas Baker, The Ring from Eveline, and so much many more winks and nods than I have time to get into here.
On top of that, it returned to the structure of the original series, with the Baker farm being a sprawling and terrifying location similar to the original mansion from Resident Evil 1. You even get the iconic key system from the original games, with these being represented by various denizens of the bayou. I probably won’t get all the way through it, but it feels like coming home in a weird way, probably since my first play through was entire in VR.
“Welcome to the family, son!”
