GOTY 2017 | Number 3 — Super Mario Odyssey

Picking the order of the top three games of 2017 was a nightmare. Each of these games are amazing in their own right and ranking them was near impossible. That being said, I have decided on an order and I am sticking to it! Super Mario Odyssey is a joy to play in nearly every way. The bright and colorful environments are packed with fun stuff to do and interact with, nearly all of which will earn you some power moons. I never had a play session with Super Mario Odyssey where I felt that no progress had been made and I always spent the entire time smiling ear to ear. It has been a long while since we’ve gotten a Mario game as open as this one and this could arguably be the best one that follows that formula. The main game doesn’t overstay its welcome, allowing you to blast through each world and get a short introduction before moving on, but doesn’t discourage sticking around and playing in each kingdom for a little longer. There are some very fun surprises after the credits roll and the game is a great one to come back to every now and then for some relaxed fun. Super Mario Odyssey just barely came in as the 3rd best game of 2017.

ESH | Smash Bros. 3DS Demo Impressions

Aside from what was implied by the hilarious commercial it received, I was not sure what to expect from the original Super Smash Bros. game when I first popped it into my N64. What I ended up with was an amazing brawling game that ended up as one of my favorite series of all time. Naturally, I was excited when Nintendo sent me, as a regular platinum Club Nintendo member, a code to play the demo for the latest entry in the series early. The demo is very sparse, but it’s been enough to give me a taste and get me excited about a few new things in the game.

ESH | Get Your Ticket to Nintendo Land

Every new game system needs that first game.  You know the one if talking about; the title that takes the time to really show you what capabilities the console has.  If you bought the deluxe package of the Wii U, then that title was packed right in the box for you.  In Nintendo Land, the titular company creates an amusement park of fun to teach you how their new system can be used.  Like any amusement park, some rides are going to be more popular than others, but the overall experience leaves you with a big smile.
